AM4 Compatibility Guide

If you’re not ready to make the jump to AM5, some AM4 CPUs can still handle gaming really well. You just need to make sure you get the right chipset and motherboard for your CPU.

For the sections labeled “Selective beta BIOS update needed” the CPU will not work with the motherboard unless it has the appropriate BIOS update to support that CPU. Otherwise, the system won’t boot so you won’t be able to upgrade the BIOS yourself. (Some motherboards have a flash installation feature that lets you upgrade the BIOS without a compatible CPU, but most do not)

Some motherboard manufacturers will put a label on their boxes such as “Ryzen 5000 Series Ready” which means the manufacturer did in fact upgrade the BIOS to support that CPU generation.
